Vitalik Buterin: Humanity Approaching 'Final Days' of Dominance Amid AI Advancement

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin warns humanity faces potential obsolescence as AI capabilities expand, advocating for measured development and human-AI collaboration.

Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum's co-founder, warned that humanity may be approaching the end of its era of dominance as artificial intelligence capabilities accelerate, arguing the critical question is no longer whether AI will surpass human intelligence but whether any domain will remain where humans are indispensable.

In an extensive X (formerly Twitter) thread, Buterin outlined three historical inflection points where machine capabilities underwent rapid advancement—the Industrial Revolution, the computer age, and now large language models—each time prompting speculation about imminent human obsolescence. He contends that contemporary LLM systems, with incremental improvements, could theoretically replace humans across most domains, though the actual trajectory remains uncertain. Buterin defines true artificial general intelligence (AGI) not as AI performing 90 percent of human work, but as systems capable of independently sustaining civilization without human intervention.

Rather than positioning AI development as adversarial toward humanity, Buterin advocates for a collaborative model where humans retain strategic decision-making authority while machines execute operational tasks. He emphasized that the optimal future scenario requires open, competitive AI development proceeding at a measured pace rather than maximum speed, enabling society sufficient time to adapt and implement safeguards if technological advancement outpaces collective preparedness.
